BioTechniques - Preventing GMO Bio-hazard Disasters

Genetically engineered microbes that are physically contained within research
labs or industry bioreactors would pose little or no threat if they somehow
managed to escape. But the number of potential applications for engineered
organisms has expanded, as well as the scale in which these organisms could
be used, necessitating a fresh look at methods for their biological
containment, or biocontainment.

Man-made microbes could be deployed to clean up environmental spills, for
example. Or they could be ingested directly for treating illnesses. In such
scenarios, the bacteria are in “open” systems, mingling with many other
organisms.
