There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.'

It's easy to understand UP , meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ?

At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ?

Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

We call UP our friends.

And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen.

We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car.

At other times the little word has real special meaning.

People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses.

To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special .

A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP .

We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP !

To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP , look the word UP in the dictionary.

In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions.

If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used.

It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP , you may wind UP with a hundred or more.

When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP .

When the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP .

When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP .

When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP .

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP ,

for now my time is UP ,

so........it is time to shut UP !

Простая фраза может сделать день замечательно хорошим или подавить всякое желание что-то делать.

У Яна Непомуцкого в "Малостранских повестях" упоминается ненормальный, который портил день встречным гнусной фразой: "Что это вы так плохо выглядите?"

Возможно, я тоже не очень нормальный, но постараюсь поступить наоборот.

Croc Diet.

Two Crocodiles were sitting by the side of the swamp near the river.

The smaller one turned to the bigger one and said, "I can’t understand

The Five Paragraph Essay.

The five paragraph essay measures a student's basic writing skills.

Use this Guide to help you practice and succeed at this form of writing.
Getting started means getting organized:
Analyze the assignment; determine what is required.
With a highlighter, note important words that define the topic.
Then organize your plan

The three main subtopics are:

Outline your five paragraph essay; include these elements:

Write the essay!
Think small; build the full essay gradually.
Divide your essay into sections and develop each piece separately and incrementally.
The Introductory Paragraph

• The opening paragraph sets the tone
  It not only introduces the topic, but where you are going with it (the thesis). If you do a good job in the opening, you will draw your reader into your "experience." Put effort up front, and you will reap rewards.
• Write in the active voice
  It is much more powerful. Do that for each sentence in the introductory essay. Unless you are writing a personal narrative, do not use the pronoun "I."
• Varying sentence structure
  Review to avoid the same dull pattern of always starting with the subject of the sentence.
• Brainstorm to find the best supporting ideas
  The best supporting ideas are the ones about which you have some knowledge. If you do not know about them, you cannot do a good job writing about them. Don't weaken the essay with ineffective argument.
• Practice writing introductory paragraphs on various topics
  Even if you do not use them, they can be compared with the type of writing you are doing now. It is rewarding to see a pattern of progress.

Supporting Paragraphs

• Write a transition to establish the sub-topic
  Each paragraph has to flow, one to the next.
• Write the topic sentence
  The transition can be included in the topic sentence.
• Supporting ideas, examples, details must be specific to the sub-topic
  The tendency in supporting paragraphs is to put in just about anything.
  Avoid this: the work you have made above with details and examples will help you keep focused.
• Vary sentence structure
  Avoid repetitious pronouns and lists
  Avoid beginning sentences the same way (subject + verb + direct object).

The Ending or Summary Paragraph
This is a difficult paragraph to write effectively.
You cannot assume that the reader sees your point

• Restate the introductory thesis/paragraph with originality
  Do not simply copy the first paragraph
• Summarize your argument with some degree of authority
  this paragraph should leave your reader with no doubt as to your position or conclusion of logic
• Be powerful as this is the last thought that you are leaving with the reader.

Edit and revise your essay
Check your spelling and grammar
Subjects and verbs agree, and verb tenses are consistent
Examine your whole essay for logic
Thought builds and flows?
Avoid gaps in logic, or too much detail.
Review individual sentences

• Use active verbs to be more descriptive
  Avoid passive constructions and the verb "to be"
• Use transitional words and phrases
  Avoid sentences beginning with pronouns, constructions as "There are....,"
  Example: "There is a need to proofread all works" becomes "Proofreading is a must."
• Be concise
  though vary the length and structure of sentences

Ask a knowledgeable friend to review and comment on your essay
and to repeat back what you are trying to say. You may be surprised.

For your Lexophiles...

"Lexophile" is a word used to describe those who have a love for words and twisted sentences, such as "you can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish", or "to write with a broken pencil is pointless." A competition to see who can come up with the best lexphillies is held every year in an undisclosed location. This year's winning submission is posted at the very end.

42 заповеди богини Ма'ат.

Отказ людей от моральных принципов всегда приводил к падению государств. Осуждение Сократа и последовавшее за этим падение Афин. Отказ Рима от своих первоначальных принципов и его падение. Падение Спарты и династии Ахеменидов.

Могут возразить, что и Афины стоят, и Рим вечный город, и Персия существует до сих пор.
Так, да не так. Нынешние Афины стоят на развалинах древних, да и те сохранились только потому, что победители не уничтожили их, вспомнив, что в них творил Еврипид. И Рим не имеет ничего общего с Римом Сципиона, Катонов и Суллы.
Возможно, Древний Египет потому и существовал 3 000 лет, что каждый его гражданин строго следовал этим заповедям. А потом пришли заповеди Маммоны.


42 принципа Ма'ат, богини Правды и справедливости, были известны каждому египтянину. Я попытался представить их в виде более близком нам, так, как они были перефразированы в Библии. В оригинале они звучат « Я не должен» например, «Я не должен желать жены ближнего». Египтяне верили, что после смерти их души будут подвергнуты суду на основании этих принципов. Моисей и израелиты были египтянами и конечно хорошо знали эти заповеди, но, побродив сорок лет по пустыням, они их, похоже, забыли и помнили только восемь из них. К этим восьми заповедям Моисей добавил три новых – не почитай чужих богов, почитай родителей и не возжелай жены ближнего и рабов его.

Замечательно не только то, насколько заповеди богини Маат более развиты, чем еврейские, но то, насколько они звучат современно.

Человечество если и прогрессировало, то в только в материальном плане, в духовном мы не только не прогрессировали, но, как видим, деградировали.
